Perform a Short Showcase at the April GJSpecial

 Posted Tuesday, February 27, 2018

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at choreogrpahing and performing? This Short Showcase Contest at the Groove Juice Special on April 28 is the perfect opportunity to give it a try in a fun, supportive envronment!

Here's how it works:

  • Performances will occur during the first band break at the April 28 GJSpecial with Sweet Megg & the Wayfarers, probably around 10pm.
  • Competitors will perform a 60-second original choreography in any style of swing. The routine may be partnered, solo, or any combination of both. Each entry must have 1-4 dancers. Non-inverting airsteps are permitted*.
  • Dancers will be judged on the creativity of their choreography, their dance technique, and their performance quality.
  • Music must be edited and submitted to the organizers by April 25, 2018. There are a selection of songs that have been cut to 60 seconds available for download here. Please email us if you choose to choreograph to one of these songs so that we can reserve it for you.
  • GJS staff and faculty are not eligible to perform in this contest. They'll be cheering you on!

Registration is FREE for this contest. Please sign up here.

Prizes for winners are for events sponsored by Providence Swings, Stompology, and Groove Juice Swing.

Is it your first time choreographing and do you want some tips?

  • Come to class! Intro to Choreographing: Musicality is on Wed. March 7, and Intro to Choreographing: The Creative Process is on Wed. March 14, both 7:15-8:45pm with Rebecca & Doriel.
  • Schedule a private lesson! Rebecca and Doriel are making themselves available for coaching sessions to help anyone who wants some individual feedback. Rebecca is available anytime March 7-21 (daytime or anytime!) and Doriel is available Sundays, Mondays daytime, or most evenings.
  • We will be holding an optional stage trial on Wednesday, April 25 6-7:15pm. Performers may come practice in the German House ballroom to prep for Saturday's performance!

*Airsteps: For your safety, we encourage practice at gyms with mats well before performing (during stage-trials and at the GJSpecial) your choreography at the German House. Please note that airsteps are not permitted during social dancing (at Lindy Jam, GJSpecials, and all other events hosted by GJS). Please contact a GJS board member if you are curious whether your choice of airstep is appropriate for this showcase, or if you have any concerns. GJS is not permitting inverting (flipping) airsteps for this contest.
